Welcoming Over 250 New Marine Animals to the Coastal Center

Florida Oceanographic Society Welcomes over 250 New Marine Animals to the Coastal Center

This holiday season, Florida Oceanographic Society is celebrating a very special milestone at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center—the arrival of more than 250 new fish and invertebrates, including parrotfish, sharks, rays, and other marine species now calling our exhibits home.

Following the closure of another accredited facility, Florida Oceanographic stepped in to provide these animals with permanent, lifelong care. Each animal will continue to serve as a conservation ambassador, helping visitors of all ages learn about Florida’s coastal ecosystems and the importance of protecting them.

“These animals now have a forever home where they can continue to inspire our community,” said Bryan Danson, Director of Animal Care & Life Support. “We hope every visitor leaves with a deeper appreciation for Florida’s coastal ecosystems and why protecting them matters.”

A Commitment to Conservation and Animal Care

This large-scale rehoming effort reflects Florida Oceanographic Society’s ongoing commitment to responsible animal care, marine conservation, and environmental education. Our expert animal care team works year-round to ensure each resident receives species-appropriate habitats, enrichment, and veterinary oversight—prioritizing both animal welfare and educational impact.

By welcoming these new residents, the Coastal Center is expanding opportunities for the public to connect with Florida’s marine life, learn about threats facing coastal ecosystems, and discover how individual actions can make a difference.
