Mangrove Rescue
About the Event
Join Our Mission to Save Stranded Mangrove Propagules!
Every August, red mangroves release hundreds of floating propagules — long, green baby trees that drift on ocean currents to find their new home. But at Florida Oceanographic’s Coastal Center, many of these young trees fall along our nature trail and become trapped behind a natural earthen dike. That’s where you come in.
How to Participate:
-
Pick up a bucket at the trailhead.
-
Walk the trail and collect any fallen propagules you find on the ground (please don’t pull them from the trees — those aren’t ready yet!).
-
Release them into the Indian River Lagoon when you reach the water’s edge — all but one!
-
Return with one propagule, and we’ll show you how to plant it in our restoration nursery.
-
Snap a photo or short video of your mangrove rescue and tag us on social media! Let us know how many you helped save.
This activity is FREE with admission and perfect for all ages. It’s a fun, educational way to protect one of Florida’s most important coastal habitats — and become a part of our mangrove restoration mission. Participants will receive a mangrove sticker for participating (while supplies last).
Thank you for supporting Florida Oceanographic Society and helping us grow the next generation of mangroves!
