Rich Cerron Monitors Water Quality in Evans Creek

About three years ago, Rich Cerron joined the Florida Oceanographic Society’s  network of water quality monitors. They contribute vital data for Florida Oceanographic’s weekly and annual water quality reporting. Rich goes out once a week, and he loves his site. “I monitor Evans Creek in the Savannas Preserve State Park, and I look forward to it,” says Rich. “I always meet people enjoying the park, and oftentimes, I’ll see alligators. It’s interesting and necessary work, and a great way to give back to my community.”

Rich got involved with Florida Oceanographic through his wife Sonya, who knows Volunteer Coordinator Rosemary Badger through dog agility programs. He’s given more than 175 hours of service in water monitoring, oyster bagging for the FL.O.O.R. (Florida Oceanographic Oyster Restoration) program, and helping to maintain the nature trails. He’s not someone who likes to sit still. Since Rich retired from his business about 10 years ago, he’s tinkered with woodworking using reclaimed wood, raised orchids, and taken golf lessons from professional players. He also likes spending time on his land near Lake Okeechobee. Rich is known as someone who will always lend a helping hand whenever and wherever it’s needed.

Originally from New York, Rich served in the Army as an instructor at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and was deployed to Vietnam in 1968. About 10 years later, he and his family moved to Martin Downs in nearby Palm City.  Over the years, Rich also lived in Arizona and New York again before returning to Florida. These days, his travel often includes visits with his brother in North Carolina and sister in Ohio. Still, he makes the time to visit Evans Creek each week.

“I really appreciate all of the volunteers and staff at the Coastal Center,” notes Rich. “Everyone is very enthusiastic and it’s clear they’re committed to the mission of Florida Oceanographic Society.
