Meet Lisa Peery

Lisa Peery and her husband, Steve, both grew up in Florida and loved living in Jupiter. But moving from Connecticut back to the Sunshine State after retirement, they wanted to find more of the ‘Old Florida’ feel. That decision led them to the Treasure Coast.

Upon finding a house in Stuart, Lisa learned from neighbors that their house was located on the property of the original headquarters of Florida Oceanographic Society from 1964 to 1987. Naturally, she was curious about the organization and wanted to learn more.

After her first visit to the Coastal Center in 2021, Lisa says she fell in love with Florida Oceanographic’s mission and was excited to learn about ways she could both volunteer and learn more about our local waterways and environment. Lisa donates her time as an Exhibit Guide, Water Tester and with oyster matting; she also participates in research efforts by hanging “oyster gardens” from the dock on her property. “I learned a lot about the value of oysters to the ecosystem of the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon,” she says, and shares the things she has learned with friends and neighbors.

She appreciates that the staff creates an environment that is friendly and welcoming. “Everyone here is eager to help the volunteers learn and improve our skills.” While learning about the environment and waterways Lisa volunteered for over 300 hours.

Her family includes being a proud parent of two fur babies — boxers, Boomer and Archie. In her leisure time, she enjoys long walks on nature trails with the dogs, biking, learning to boat, visiting the many interesting sites in Florida and volunteering at church.
