Lake Okeechobee Discharge - Update!

April 11th, 2024 - The recent announcement from the USACE to end harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges marks a crucial milestone in our ongoing battle to protect our waterways and ecosystems. 

Together, we've made strides, but our journey is far from over. Let's keep pushing forward, united in our commitment to preserve and restore the natural beauty of our beloved Florida.

February 16th, 2024 - Florida Oceanographic Society, recently sent a letter to Governor DeSantis detailing our concerns with these releases. In our letter, we highlighted the critical need for the Governor to voice his objection to these releases, as they will result in the pollution of nitrogen and phosphorus, and the destruction of vital estuarine habitats. Governor DeSantis should urge the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to collaborate with USACE to redirect these releases to the Everglades. The Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) are being filled with polluted water by private agricultural basin runoff, leaving them too full to filter water flowing from Lake Okeechobee. This mismanagement of water capacity must come to an end.
